Reduction of Isolation
When conducting programmatic intake interviews with newly arrived survivors of torture and other forced migrants, we often hear that they are coping with significant challenges and pain that go beyond the particular traumatic events and torture they have experienced. They frequently talk of an overarching sense of isolation: of being adrift in this “cold society” where “everyone is busy,” it’s “dog eat dog,” and it’s “every man for himself.” They have been forcibly pulled away from their usual sources of communal and emotional support, and they face significant barriers toward forming trusting interpersonal connections and social networks (Smith 2003). Group interventions have been shown to be useful in addressing vulnerabilities in social functioning and relationship development (Bunn et al. 2016; Kira et al. 2012; Stepakoff et al. 2006).
When survivors are placed in a context where their experiences, insights, and thoughts are received in a context of mutual respect, it helps them to find their voices in at least one environment, which may be a welcome respite from other social situations in which they may be too intimidated to speak up.
